Can an Electrician Move an NBN Box?

Can an Electrician Move an NBN Box?

As more Australian homes and businesses switch to the National Broadband Network (NBN), questions often arise about how the equipment works and especially whether it’s possible to move it. For many homeowners, the NBN connection box or NBN utility box ends up in an inconvenient spot: a garage, hallway, bedroom, or somewhere that interferes with furniture placement or Wi-Fi performance.

This leads to one of the most common questions: Can an electrician move an NBN box?

The short answer is: Yes, but only certain parts of the system and only if they are appropriately licensed. Below, we break down exactly what an electrician can do, what they can’t, and what you should know before scheduling any work.

Understanding Your NBN Equipment

Before deciding whether the NBN equipment can be moved, it helps to understand what you’re looking at. Different NBN technologies come with different components, and the rules for moving them vary.

1. NBN Connection Box (Inside the Home)

This device may also be called:

  • NBN modem (for FTTP)

  • NCD (Network Connection Device) for FTTN, FTTC, or HFC

It usually connects to:

  • A power outlet

  • Your router

  • Existing phone or data cabling

2. NBN Utility Box (Outside the Home)

This weather-proof box is installed on the exterior wall and connects your home to the fibre or copper network in the street.

3. Cabling

Depending on your NBN type, your home may have:

  • Coaxial cable

  • Copper telephone wiring

  • Ethernet data cabling

  • Fibre lead-ins

Each has its own installation rules and restrictions under Australian regulations.

So, Can an Electrician Move an NBN Box?

✔ Yes, If They’re a Registered Cabler

Only licensed cablers with the appropriate endorsements can legally work on telecommunications systems, including NBN equipment.

This means an electrician must also hold a valid Open Cabling Licence, plus any relevant endorsements (such as fibre or coaxial) to relocate the box legally.

✔ They Can Move:

  • The internal NBN connection box (NBN modem/NCD)

  • Data points and Ethernet outlets

  • Internal cabling linked to your NBN router setup

✘ They Cannot Move:

  • The external NBN utility box (outside wall box)

  • The actual fibre lead-in cable from the street

  • Any NBN-owned wiring or property

Only NBN-approved technicians can work on the external parts of the network. If your request involves moving the outside box or the lead-in, you must book through NBN Co, often for a fee.

Why You Might Want to Move Your NBN Box

  1. Better Wi-Fi Performance: A centrally located connection box allows you to position your router for improved coverage throughout the home.
  2. Renovations or Extensions: If your home layout changes, the NBN equipment may end up somewhere impractical or inaccessible.
  3. Safety and Convenience: Boxes installed in children’s bedrooms, near doorways, or behind appliances can be hazards or simply annoying.
  4. Home Office setups: Working from home often requires moving the NBN box to be closer to your workstation or network hardware.

How Much Does It Cost to Move an NBN Box?

While costs vary, here’s a general guide:

Electrician / Cabler Relocation Costs

  • Basic internal relocation: $150 – $350

  • Running new cabling through walls: $250 – $500

  • Complex or multi-room moves: $400+

NBN Co Relocation Fees (for external boxes)

  • Usually $300 – $600, depending on complexity

  • Must be booked through your internet provider

These are typical industry prices, but your final cost will depend on:

  • Wall type (brick, timber, double storey)

  • Distance from the original location

  • Access to the roof cavity

  • Type of cabling required

What’s Involved in Moving an NBN Box?

1. Inspection – The technician checks your current NBN equipment location and confirms the best new position for relocation.

2. Cabling Assessment – They assess whether new cabling, conduits, or power outlets are required for the move.

3. Relocation Work – The technician disconnects and repositions the NBN box while running any necessary new cabling or Ethernet points.

4. Testing – A licensed cabler verifies that signal quality, speed, and network communication all remain stable after the move.

Can You Move the NBN Box Yourself?

No. Australian telecommunications regulations prohibit unlicensed individuals from altering data or NBN cabling.

DIY cabling can:

  • reduce internet performance

  • void warranties

  • cause electrical hazards

  • breach legal requirements

  • interfere with the NBN network

Only licensed professionals should perform any relocation work.

How to Choose the Right Electrician or Cabler

When booking someone to move your NBN box, check that they have:

  • ✔ Open Cabling Licence

  • ✔ Relevant endorsements (Fibre, Coaxial, Structured Cabling)

  • ✔ Experience with NBN installations

  • ✔ Good reviews and clear pricing

Asking for their cabling registration number is perfectly normal and ensures compliance with Australian law.

Final Thoughts: Yes, You Can Move Your NBN Box, But Do It Properly

An electrician can move your NBN box only if they are also a licensed telecommunications cabler. Internal relocations are common and often affordable, but anything involving the external NBN utility box or street connection must go through NBN Co.

If your current setup is inconvenient, poorly placed, or impacting your Wi-Fi performance, moving your NBN equipment is a smart investment that can dramatically improve your home network experience.
