How to Prepare Your Home Before NBN Technician Arrives

How to Prepare Your Home Before NBN Technician Arrives

Getting connected to the National Broadband Network (NBN) can bring faster internet and improved connectivity to your home, but the installation process requires a bit of preparation. Whether you’re upgrading your current connection or getting NBN for the first time, the NBN technician will need access to specific areas of your home, and a little pre-installation preparation can ensure the process goes smoothly and efficiently.

In this blog, we’ll walk you through everything you need to know and do before the NBN technician arrives at your door, so that you can make sure the installation is as quick and easy as possible.

1. Understand Your NBN Type

Before preparing for the technician’s visit, it’s important to know which type of NBN connection you’re getting, as this will determine how the technician installs the service. The three most common types of NBN connections are:

  • FTTP (Fibre to the Premises): The fibre optic cable is installed directly into your home, providing the fastest and most reliable internet connection.
  • FTTC (Fibre to the Curb): Fibre runs to a nearby curb or street cabinet, and your home is connected using the existing copper wiring.
  • FTTN (Fibre to the Node): The fibre optic cable runs to a street node, and the rest of the connection uses existing copper lines.
  • HFC (Hybrid Fibre Coaxial): Uses coaxial cables (similar to the ones used for cable TV) to connect your home to the NBN.
  • Fixed Wireless: For areas where fibre cannot be laid, a wireless signal is transmitted to your home from a fixed tower.
  • Satellite: Used for rural and remote areas, the satellite NBN sends a signal to a dish installed on your property.

Understanding your NBN types helps you anticipate what needs to be done before the technician arrives, so check with your NBN provider or your installation details to confirm the connection type.

2. Clear the Installation Area

The technician will need access to specific parts of your home to install the necessary equipment. It’s essential to clear these areas in advance to avoid any delays and make the technician’s job easier.

Common areas that may require clearing:

  • The Room for the NBN Box: The NBN box or modem (known as the NBN connection device or NCD) is typically installed in a central location of your home. This could be in a living room, office, or hallway. Clear a space where the technician can place the equipment, and ensure it’s near a power outlet.
  • The External Wall for Cables: If you’re getting FTTP or HFC, there may be cables running from the outside of your home into the NBN equipment. Clear any furniture, plants, or obstructions near the external wall where the technician might need access.
  • The Telstra/Phone Line Box (for FTTN or FTTC): If you’re getting FTTN or FTTC, the technician will likely need access to the existing phone line box (sometimes known as a ‘pit’) or the Telstra box. Ensure the area is free of clutter.

3. Check for Easy Access to Power Outlets

The NBN modem and any additional equipment, such as a Wi-Fi router or the NBN connection device, will need power. The technician will typically bring their own cables, but it’s helpful to ensure that there’s an accessible power outlet near where the NBN equipment will be installed. It’s also a good idea to check if the outlet is working properly and that there are no issues with power strips or extension cords.

4. Confirm Your Connection Points

Before the technician arrives, take a few minutes to confirm where you want your NBN connection to be installed. If you already have an existing phone or data line, you’ll need to let the technician know where you’d like them to set up the NBN connection. Here are a few things to consider:

  • The NBN Box Location: Do you want the NBN box installed near your existing modem or router? Do you have a preference for a specific room or corner of your home?
  • Router Placement: Will the technician install the modem and router in the same location, or do you want them to set up your Wi-Fi router elsewhere in the house?
  • Cable Management: Think about how you’d like the cables managed—do you want them neatly hidden or along a specific route?

Having a clear idea of where you want the equipment placed will make the technician’s job easier and help them avoid any confusion during the installation.

5. Ensure Clear Access to Your Property

For outdoor installations (such as FTTP, HFC, or Fixed Wireless), the technician will need access to your external walls, the area around your property, or the street. Make sure that gates, fences, or any other access points are open and clear so that the technician can do their job quickly.

For example:

  • If the installation involves a new external box: Ensure any shrubs, fences, or obstacles near the external wall are cleared.
  • For Fixed Wireless connections: If you have trees, bushes, or other obstructions that could block the line of sight to the nearest tower, it’s best to remove these.

6. Check Your Equipment and Internet Plan

Before the technician arrives, double-check the equipment you’ve received and confirm your internet plan details. For example:

  • Equipment: Make sure you have the modem or router that’s compatible with your NBN connection type (you can often rent these from your provider or purchase your own). If you haven’t received the necessary equipment, contact your provider before the installation day.
  • Internet Plan: Double-check that your internet plan is activated with your service provider and that all payments or contracts are in order. If you have special requests, such as speed requirements or bundle options, now is the time to confirm them.

7. Be Ready for Potential Delays

While the NBN installation process is usually smooth, it can sometimes be delayed due to weather, technical difficulties, or other unforeseen circumstances. Be prepared for the possibility of a longer installation time. It’s also worth noting that some types of installations, particularly FTTP, can take several hours.

Make sure you have some flexibility in your schedule and that you’re available to answer questions during the installation process.

8. Ask Questions and Discuss Concerns

The installation process is a great opportunity to ask the technician any questions about your NBN connection. Here are a few things to consider asking:

  • Speed and Performance: Ask the technician about the expected speed and performance of your NBN connection based on your internet plan.
  • Wi-Fi Coverage: If you plan to use Wi-Fi, ask the technician if your current setup is optimal for good coverage throughout the house, or if they suggest a different configuration.
  • Troubleshooting: What should you do if your NBN connection drops or you experience slow speeds? It’s helpful to get the technician’s advice on common troubleshooting steps.
  • Modem Settings: If you have specific preferences for your modem’s settings (like changing the default Wi-Fi name or password), this is a good time to ask.

9. Test the Connection After Installation

Once the technician has completed the installation, take the time to test your internet connection. Make sure the NBN box is working, check your Wi-Fi signal strength, and confirm that everything is functioning as expected.

If you encounter any issues during the testing phase, don’t hesitate to raise them with the technician immediately, as they will often resolve minor issues on the spot.

Conclusion

Preparing your home before the NBN technician arrives can help the installation process go smoothly and quickly. By clearing the installation areas, ensuring power access, confirming your equipment and plan, and being ready for potential delays, you’ll make it easier for the technician to install your NBN service. With a little foresight and preparation, you’ll be enjoying faster, more reliable internet in no time!

Remember to ask the technician any questions you may have about your connection, and don’t forget to test everything after installation. With the right setup, your NBN connection will provide you with a better online experience, whether you’re streaming, working, or gaming.
